How to capture any text with your smartphone using Google Lens

Has it ever happened that your teacher sent you an assignment via school group messenger, but unfortunately, it was just a picture with a list of all the homework that needs to be done? It's very frustrating for some students, isn't it? What if the message in the image was a long, hard-to-copy URL?

Are you still going to finish your homework? Maybe you need to complete the task, but it's hard. To simplify the process of copying text from images, I will show you how to make the process easier.

The important thing is that you need a smartphone with the Google Lens app installed. Most smartphones now have a built-in Google Lens installed, so it's not difficult for others to access these apps now. If your smartphone doesn't have Google Lens, you can still download it from the Google Play Store using this link.

How to Open Google Lens?

The first step is to open Google Lens. Alternatively, search for Google Lens in your apps and open it from there (some Android phones also have a small Google Lens icon built into the native camera app that will automatically launch Google Lens out of the camera when you press it to open it).

  1. Point your camera at the text you want to copy.
  2. There should be several options at the bottom of the screen. Tap “Text” to switch to text capture mode.
  3. As soon as your camera is pointed at the text, it will highlight it automatically.
  4. Tap the big document icon in the screen's middle bottom to capture the highlighted text.
  5. Now tap, “Select All.”
  6. Now, you can tap "Copy text" to copy all highlighted text. You can then paste it into your favorite note-taking application. Google Lens isn't infallible, so make sure to manually check for errors.

Other Features:

Google Lens is good at copying different words and has many hidden features that most people don't know about. These features can be used in our daily life. And it can also be used wherever we go where a quick answer is needed. Let's take a closer look at Google Lens' different features.

Copy to Computer

You can copy your content directly to a connected computer with the latest version of Google Chrome. Note that you must sign in with your Google account.

  1. Follow the previous directions to capture text with your phone’s camera.
  2. Instead of tapping “Copy Text,” swipe the list to the left — you should see an option labeled “Copy to Computer.”
  3. Send to the device of your choosing.
  4. Open Google Documents on the device you sent the text to.
  5. Navigate to the “Edit” tab.
  6. Select “Paste,” and the copied text from your phone will automatically paste over!

Search the Web

This text capture function allows you to search the web directly through Google Lens.

  1. Follow the above instructions to capture text using your phone’s camera and Google Lens.
  2. Instead of “Copy Text,” select and tap “Search.”
  3. Using this feature, you can automatically find an example of text matching your copy! (Note that Google limits this search to 32 words, which should be more than enough to find some matches!)

Homework

Another feature of Google Lens is quickly finding explainers, videos, and results from the web for math, history, chemistry, biology, physics, and more. Let Google Lens answer the tough questions for you effortlessly.

  1. Open Google Lens.
  2. Find and press the Homework button.
  3. Take a picture of the questions you want Google Lens to answer.
  4. Mark the questions you would like Google Lens to answer.
  5. While marking, Google Lens automatically provides possible answers to the questions below.

Shopping

Something beautiful caught your eye, and you really liked it. Suddenly, you are interested in knowing everything about it. Where to buy it, how much it cost, and other details about the thing you saw. Using Google Lens in your search will make finding what you're looking for easier. Here are a few steps you need to follow.

  1. Open Google Lens.
  2. Find and press the Shopping button.
  3. Take a picture of the item you want to buy.
  4. After taking a picture of an item, it will automatically provide different pictures similar to what you are looking for.
